Bite Balance and Timing
Dental occlusion is the way your teeth meet when you bite together, chew and swallow. All teeth should come into contact with one another simultaneously with minimal force. As you chew and move your jaw around your back teeth should not touch.
When this does not happen, your occlusion is unbalanced and as a result you may experience:
- Excessive wear
- Damaged restorations
- Teeth becoming loose
- Gums recede
- Jaw joint clicks
- Pain in the jaw joint
- Ringing in the ears
- Muscle tension in the face and neck
- Sensitive teeth
We will ask you to bite on a very thin sensor, called a T-Scan™, to measure how your teeth contact together, including the force of your bite and moving your jaw from side to side. This data is then analysed by a computer and presented as a movie. Timing measurements are taken and the sequence and force of tooth contact is noted.
We will then use this information to explain the range of treatments available to you to help resolve your symptoms.
Jaw Joint Analysis - Derby East Midlands
Whenever we move our jaws to eat, talk or swallow we use a series of muscles to move the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
The TMJ is a complex structure of bone, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and muscles bound together in a capsule. The capsule is filled with lubricating fluid produced by special cells.
In a normal joint, as your jaw opens the top of the jaw bone moves down a groove in your skull. To stop any rubbing and grinding a disk of cartilage, positioned between the two bones, moves with the jaw.
If the disk of cartilage has become dislocated the jaw bone rubs against the skull often causing pain. As your jaw opens wide the cartilage, which is tethered to the back of the joint, pops back into place.
Over time the stress on the joint structures caused by the dislocation of the disk can cause significant and irreparable damage. As we move the TMJ several thousand times a day, ensuring it moves correctly is critical to your health.
Symptoms of TMJ damage
- Chronic headaches
- Ringing in the ears
- Ear congestion
- Facial pain
- Jaw pain
- Clenching & grinding teeth
- Dizziness
- Shoulder/back pain
- Limited jaw opening or locking jaw.
Joint Vibration Analysis
We also use a joint vibration analyser (JVA) to sense the vibrations coming from the joint determine the internal condition of the TMJ. This is a very accurate method and is completely non-invasive.
Joint Vibration Analysis (JVA) places a set of sensors is placed over the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). You open and close your mouth to make your TMJ function. The sensors pick up the vibrations coming from the TMJ on each side and the data is analysed to produce a very accurate understanding of your joint.
Full Biometric Analysis for Orofacial Pain and Headache Sufferers
When doctors and neurologists can find no cause for the headaches, it may be possible that have some form of craniofacial problem related to your TM joint and the way your teeth fit together or the muscles of your head and neck.
To determine the nature of the problem we will undertake a series of diagnostic tests including:
- Joint Vibration Analysis (electrovibroscopy)
Rehabilitation Analysis
After undertaking our diagnostic tests, we will then discuss with you our findings and the range of possible treatments.
