Yet again the dental nurses at Allenton Dental; Derby, have travelled far and wide to experience the best courses that are on offer to them. This time they went to Hull to learn how to take impressions efficiently. The course was run by Julia Armstrong and Geraldine Birks who are a part of the York and Humber Deanery, who provide the best and most informative courses available

Our nurses spent the day learning the different requirements of impressions taking, the best materials to use and also had hands on experience of taking impressions on each other under the guidance of Simon Bowen, who has been a dental practitioner for over thirty years. He gave the nurses advice on how to gain the best impressions and how to reduce discomfort for patients.

After attending the impressions course our nurses at Allenton Dental; Derbyshire, are now capable of demonstrating the desired skills and knowledge to take impressions ensuring an accurate detailed cast can be made in the laboratory under the prescription of the dentist. This is an ongoing achievement for our nurses who have been gaining experience in practice. This is also beneficial to our dentists who can now refer patients who need impressions to one of the nurses giving them more time for other duties. This in effect is drawing our team together and ensuring that we all have a chance to display the skills that we learn and progress in our careers with the patient’s welfare in mind.

Our nurses are looking forward to attending more courses and are hoping to be able to attend a course on oral hygiene which would enable them to provide our patients with the information they need in regard to keeping their teeth clean. They can also offer advice on diet options which can affect the teeth. We feel this is important to all our patients but in particular we like to give children the information they need on tooth brushing and diet so they grow up knowing exactly how to look after their own teeth and will hopefully grow up needing little or no work.

If you would like any further information on dental nurses or the courses that they attend then please feel free to contact us at Allenton Dental on 01332 700244

We are pleased to announce the return of one of our dentists, Sarah Hassall. She is returning after only four months of maternity leave after the birth of her wonderful daughter Orla Ryan. Sarah will be returning to work on Tuesday 1st of May and is already becoming fully booked with patients eager for her return.

Having a female dentist is very beneficial to Allenton Dental as we feel it gives our patients the choice that often goes overlooked. Going to the dentist can sometimes be a scary experience even for those who attend regularly just for the fear of the unknown so even a simple thing like seeing a lady dentist can ease the fear tremendously. Finding a female dentist in Derby can be a difficult task so we want to make people aware of Sarah and the high standard of work that she provides on a day to day basis. Sarah has been with Allenton Dental for nearly ten years now after graduating at Leeds University. She has a large following of patients who enjoy their trips to the dentist not only for a check up but also a catch up with our friendly team.

A lot can happen in the six months between appointments and Sarah takes great pleasure in getting to know new patients and catching up with her regular patients from Derby and further afield. She is a great asset to Allenton Dental and her patients will surely agree when I say she is dedicated, professional and a patient dentist who finds it easy to go through the different options that are available to our patients; and tailor a treatment plan suited specifically to that person which is best for them.

If you are a patient of Sarah’s and are due a check up then please contact us for an appointment as she is getting booked quite rapidly. If you are not a patient but would like to see a female dentist then contact at us at Allenton Dental on 01332 700244

At Allenton Dental we pride ourselves on keeping up to date with the most current treatments and techniques. One of the most important progressions in dentistry is the use of implants. They are vital when it comes to replacing missing teeth permanently. Implants are a great way to rejuvenate your smile completely having great benefits, for example if you have several teeth missing, they can be used to hold dentures in place to secure a good fit and complete a ‘gappy’ smile.

People lose teeth on a regular basis whether through trauma, decay, old age or gum disease. An implant is a perfect way of replacing the missing tooth and filling the gap. The actual implant is an artificial metal rod usually made from titanium which is implanted into the patients jaw. It is then left for several months so that the bone and the implant can integrate and become one firm unit. After this stage the implant can then be crowned to form a full tooth.

The Principal dentist at Allenton Dental, Sanjoy Rakshit, has travelled as far as Hong Kong to attend the best courses on implants to ensure our patients get the newest and best implants that are available. We are now able to complete implant retained dentures which has been a great help to our patients who have loose or ill fitting dentures. Losing your teeth leads to bone loss which continues over time. If a substantial amount of bone loss occurs, the lower jawbone may not be able to support a denture. Inserting two implants into the lower jawbone provides support for the new denture and in effect enabling the patient to function correctly with a new set of teeth and new lease of life. Similar problems can occur with the upper set of dentures which can sometimes make the patient gag as they tend to cover the full palate. Having upper implants allows the denture size to be reduced which can reduce gagging completely.

We are currently offering free consultations for patients who are looking to have implant so if you would like further information on implants or implant retained dentures them please feel free to contact Allenton Dental on 01332 700244.

At derby dental practice, Allenton Dental, we take great pride in the care that we show to our patients. We like to ensure that our patients receive the best treatment there is in order to prolong the life of their teeth. The most vital part of the teeth are the gums as they are the supporting structure and if they are not well maintained this could cause lost teeth without there being anything dentally wrong with it so we make this our main priority during our routine check up.

If you find that whilst brushing your teeth the gums bleed, this is the first indication of gum disease. The bleeding is due to plaque building up around and below the gum line which can cause bone destruction around the tooth causing it to become mobile which can lead to tooth loss if not treated. There are two different types of gum disease; there technical terms are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the term to describe gums that bleed or appear swollen and peridontitis is the more advanced stages of gum disease and the symptoms to this include bad breath, sensitive teeth, receding gums and possible abscesses or pus seeping from the gums.

The way in which we deal with gum disease has changed over the years with our dentists attending many courses updating their knowledge. We now deal with gum disease in stages which are structured to provide you with the knowledge to eliminate gum disease at its root cause. The first stage is intense oral hygiene instruction in which we aim to provide you with the knowledge of how to brush your teeth correctly and efficiently. We go through the use of the electric toothbrush, interdental brushes and use of floss. We like to provide our patients with the knowledge of what gum disease is and how using different instruments can help combat it.

The next stage is reinforcement of the oral hygiene instruction where we go through the brushing regime again to create a better understanding than the first session which often works as people tend to take more in the second time around. If the gum disease is still present after the two oral hygiene sessions then we go to the third stage where we clean the gums under antibiotics. This kills the plaque on contact and aids in healing the gums. If this still does not tackle the problem, it could mean that surgery of the gums is in order to clean further down if there are large pockets around the tooth that cannot be reached by a toothbrush or the antibiotics. We rarely have to resort to surgery, only in very severe cases.

If you suffer from the symptoms of gum disease or are concerned about painful gums please feel free to contact Allenton Dental on 01332 700244 and we can help you help yourself.

At Allenton Dental we aim to provide the best treatment we possibly can. One of the most common treatments we provide is fillings and as people become more aware of their appearance, we know that white fillings are more popular for cosmetic reasons. Our dentists want to ensure the best quality available and have been trained to use a variety of materials to create an invisible filling

The main advantages of having a white filling are that they are more aesthetically pleasing than amalgam fillings as the composite can blend in with the rest of the tooth. This is the most obvious advantage however there are several more benefits to choosing composite. Since the composite is bonded directly to the tooth, this saves a large amount of tooth structure as less drilling is required when preparing the tooth to be filled.

There are several different composite systems available. We currently use Mirus composite which is an innovative restorative system providing the patient with the best invisible fillings throughout the mouth. This technique can take a little longer than the standard filling, but the results are outstanding. The shade guide inside the Mirus kit is vast compared to most kits, ensuring that the shade matches the rest of the teeth perfectly!

The procedure for a composite filling is very similar to the amalgam version. The dentist will give you an anesthetic to numb the area; then proceed in placing rubber dam over the tooth to keep the area completely dry. They will then use a small drill to remove decay ensuring that the tooth is completely free of decay or cracks. The tooth is dried and then etched with a mild acid; this roughens the tooth surface enough to ensure the composite material bonds to the tooth in the same way that a bonding agent used after to ensure the composite adheres. The composite is then placed, using a layering technique, into the cavity and shaped as needed. The dental nurse will then shine a ultraviolet light inside your mouth which activates and hardens the composite instantly. Finally, the dentist will trim and polish the filling until it achieves the desired finish.

We have a large portfolio which contains before and after photographs of patients who have had composite fillings which show the outstanding results our dentists can achieve. On many occasion our patients find it difficult to tell their tooth apart from the filling. We also have patients who have had their amalgam fillings replaced with composite and are very happy with the immediate results that are achieved!

If you are considering replacing your amalgam fillings with composite or would like further information then contact Allenton Dental on 01332 700244 to find out how the Derby Dentist can improve your smile!

At Allenton Dental we are a great believer in preventative dentistry and to be able to do this we like to encourage our patients to learn about the ways to keep their own teeth in the best health without the dentist’s intervention.

The best form of dentistry is no dentistry so we encourage all our patients of the best techniques to keep their teeth clean, the best things to use and what to avoid in terms of food and drinks. We like to encourage people of all ages to understand which foods to cut down on and which foods to avoid completely. The obvious things to avoid or at least consume in moderation are sweets and fizzy drinks as they contain a large quantity of sugar which can be harmful to teeth. However there are other foods that contain sugar that you wouldn’t necessarily be aware of such as yoghurt which can contain four teaspoons of sugar. Even crisps can contain sugar so it is always wise to check the nutrition instructions on the back of the packet. As for adults consuming alcohol, you could be surprised to know that a pint of cider can contain up to five teaspoons of sugar, making a night out quite hazardous to your teeth!

Every time you eat something the PH level in your mouth reduces which means the acid in your mouth is higher which creates the ideal environment for bacteria to attack teeth so it is wise to reduce snacking to a minimum, having treats such as sweets is advised straight after a meal to reduce the frequency of acid attack. The one thing that helps buffer the attack is the saliva in the mouth which helps balance the ph so it is advisable to chew sugar free gum directly after a meal to increase the saliva flow and reduce the acid.

Another important aspect of teeth maintenance is when to brush. The common theory and what most people do is brush after meals which can be quite harmful for the teeth; when the acid levels are high, the enamel becomes soft so at this point brushing can cause wear and abrasion cavities. It is wiser to brush the teeth before meals if possible or to wait at least an hour after a meal to brush.

At Allenton Dental, we spend a great deal of time going through these different things and offering tips and advice to our patients in more detail so if you would like further information on sugar contents, nutritional advice or if you have other dental concerns, please feel free to contact Allenton Dental on 01332 700244.

At Allenton Dental we take great pride in our patients well being and at our routine examination we also include a full examination of the soft tissues which includes checking the cheeks, palate, throat, tongue, floor of the mouth, and lips. The purpose of the soft tissue examination is to detect pathological changes in the tissues that line the inside of the mouth.

While the vast majority of pathology in the mouth is benign, precancerous and cancerous changes in the oral tissues may be found. It is best if detected at an early stage when it can be successfully treated. The main risk factors involved with mouth cancer are smoking and excessive drinking. Changes in the mouth can also be caused by tongue and cheek biting which can become a more serious problem if left undetected.

Mouth cancer can appear as a painless mouth ulcer that doesn’t heal, it can also appear as a white or red patch again doesn’t heal. We are here to raise awareness for mouth cancer and increase the number of cases of people cured due to catching it early and knowing the signs. If mouth cancer is spotted early, the chances of it being cured are good especially if the ulcer hasn’t had time to increase in size. Too many people come forward to late because they do not visit the dentist on a regular basis.

We are a dedicated team at Allenton Dental and do our best to sponsor all sorts of research into mouth cancer prevention and treatment. This year our principal dentist Mr. Rakshit is taking part in the 10k run at Pride Park, with fellow runner Jon, in order to raise much needed awareness and donations for the Mouth Cancer Foundation Charity, and your support and sponsorship would be much appreciated. You can donate directly to his Virgin Giving page.

If you have any concerns about your own mouth or would like further information on mouth cancer or would like to sponsor Mr Rakshit on his 10k run then please contact us at Allenton Dental on 01332 700244.

Do you suffer from minor cracks or chips to your teeth that affect your smile?

At Allenton Dental we offer a wide range of services that can improve the appearance of your teeth. We are one of a few dental practices in Derby that have componeers available. These veneers are a less intrusive way of covering one or several teeth and creating the perfect smile at a lower cost!

Componeers can be used to cover damaged, crooked, or stained teeth and can also be used as an alternative to orthodontics to close up small gaps in the mouth. To complete a componeer, the dentist will check the condition of the front teeth and discuss options in regard to the shape and shade which suits the individual. When both patient and dentist are happy with the outcome the next stage is to prepare the tooth for veneering which is very minimal due to tooth enamel shells which we use being very thin. The final stage is to place the componeer into the correct position and then sculpt it into the desired shape by our experienced and skilled dentists.

There are several benefits to choosing componeer over other treatments. For instance the porcelain veneers that many people tend to think of when enquiring about cosmetic dentistry are much more destructive to the tooth structure than componeer. There is a lot less drilling necessary with a componeer as the material is moulded specifically to the tooth and bonded directly on rather than being made in the laboratory. This also enables us to complete the treatment in one visit and in the unlikely event of our patients being unhappy with their treatment; it can be rectified in surgery without having to wait for the veneer to be replaced at another source. They are also much more cost effective than porcelain veneers leaving money spare to possibly have tooth whitening which Allenton Dental can also provide.

This procedure is not available at many practices due to the dedication and skill needed to complete it. At Allenton Dental, our dentists have completed several courses on componeer and have completed many cases in surgery with fantastic results. There is a certain artistic element required when sculpting the veneers onto the tooth and this is available to see in our portfolio of before and after photographs from patients’ young and old which we are happy to display to illustrate the great results we are capable of achieving.

This technique can change the life of people who are on a limited budget and are worried about the appearance of their teeth!

If you feel you suffer from any of the problems mentioned above then please feel free to contact Allenton Dental on 01332 700244 for further information or a consultation with one of our derby dentists.

Would you like to improve the appearance of your smile? The results are closer than you think. Allenton Dental in Derby can provide you with that Hollywood smile that you are after in less time than you think. We offer many different treatment plans tailored to each individual patient. The cosmetic dentistry we provide can include crowns, onlays, composite fillings, bridges, veneers, implants or whitening or in bigger cases we can also provide orthodontics using both metal braces (train tracks) or Clear Aligner, Invisable braces!

We have completed and improved the smiles of many of our patients who have been delighted with the results from minor restorations of chips and cracks to full mouth reconstructions which involve a large amount of dedication from our dental team to provide the best and most visibly pleasing results.

Having a smile makeover has increased our patient’s confidence. We have had patients who have been afraid of smiling previous to their treatment and in the final stages cannot stop smiling. Their friends notice a change not only in their appearance but also in their attitude to life. This sort of treatment isn’t only for the younger generation. We have had patients in their 80’s who have had full cosmetic dentistry to improve their smile.

Some dentists when carrying out cosmetic work have a tendency to concentrate fully on the appearance of their patients teeth and can sometimes lack the knowledge to complete work which is also functionally sound. With all our work cosmetic and other, we ensure that a full function test is carried out before the work is completed in the mouth in order to ensure that our patients have full and better chewing ability. There are several cases where our patients have had difficulty chewing due to missing teeth or a misplaced bite and this can be rectified by our great team or dentists who continually attend courses to improve their knowledge and abilities.

If you would like to discuss your own teeth and the possibility of having a full cosmetic make over or having any of the stages mentioned above then please feel free to contact us at Allenton Dental on 01332 700244 for more information and/or a consultation with one of our dentists.

While not everyone is born with a naturally beautiful smile, we all deserve one.

As a practice Allenton Dental is constantly striving to create better quality services for our patients and in order to do this high quality equipment is vital. It is important to us that our patients understand the treatment that is required for themselves and so after some discussion and plenty of patient feedback we have now had intraoral cameras installed.

Our intraoral cameras are a very advanced piece of equipment which will provide our patients with the understanding of the dentist as they will be able to see what they see. The camera is a small pen sized device which is placed into the mouth to record and monitor the teeth and gums enabling your dental team to give them a walkthrough of what they are doing and lessening the anxiety that can be felt when attending the dentist.

The intraoral cameras are also beneficial to our dentists as they can pick up fractures and caries/decay that are not visible to the naked eye. They can be used to take a movie or a still image in your mouth so we are able to display it on our computer monitors and literally illustrate the treatment needed; the unique liquid lens works much like the human eye, providing clear and crisp images.

The cameras will be a vital tool in our derby dental practice providing patients who are having long term or cosmetic dentistry progress pictures which will be attached to their medical records. These will be great to look at when the work is complete to have a visual album of the great work our professional dentists provide. It may not be appealing to some patients to have a full visual of their own dental problems, however it is important to deal with these problems as soon as they are discovered and using the intraoral camera we can prevent any major treatment that could be needed if the problem is left undetected.

If you feel like you are having problems or would simply like to experience the tour through your own mouth and would like more information on intraoral cameras, contact Allenton Dental on 01332 700244.

An intraoral camera helps you become a true partner in your dental care.
