Living with an impacted tooth can be very painful and unpleasant. An impacted tooth is when the tooth is either stuck in the gum or coming through at an angle. In both cases, the pressure of the tooth trying to come through can then push on the other teeth and become very uncomfortable and painful. This usually happens when there is not enough space for the tooth to come through, which means either the mouth is too small to accommodate or the tooth coming through is too large.
The most common teeth to become impacted are wisdom teeth as they arrive a long time after the other teeth have come through and settled in their own position. They also have a tendency of pushing through gradually, causing pain and then ceasing for a while only to return to pushing through again.
Tooth impaction will not go away. It will need some form of treatment which is usually extraction. If left, more problems can occur such as food trapping around the impacted area causing decay on the impacted tooth or even worse the tooth next to it which could result in the loss of two teeth.
Regular visits to the dentist are always advisable but even more so when a problem like this occurs as leaving it to get worse makes treatment more difficult than if the problem is caught early.
