When it comes to oral hygiene, your routine should not stop at brushing. Cleaning interdentally is just as important as the rest. The reason for brushing the teeth is to remove plaque which is actually a biofilm created by a large amount of bacteria. If left in the mouth without the intervention of brushing or flossing, it can harden and become tartar. This is the body’s natural defence to the attack of bacteria. It literally mummifies the plaque in the mouth. Tartar is unsightly and can only be removed by a scaler at the dentist so it is always best to remove plaque before it hardens.
The reasons for regular flossing include-
- Prevention of plaque buildup which reduces the amount of tartar created.
- To reduce bacteria in between the teeth and prevent cavities.
- To prevent gum disease, bone loss and tooth loss.
- To create a healthy mouth which will smell as fresh as it looks.
If you find using floss difficult then there are such things as floss picks which is a piece of floss attached to a tooth pick which makes it easier to glide the floss between the teeth. However at Allenton Dental we prefer the use of floss without the pick as it is more effective to wrap the floss around the tooth.
